The Raiders hosts the ‘Iolani Girls Prep Classic for the eleventh time in 2017. ‘Iolani is led by head coach Dean Young, who is entering his 5th year at the helm after finishing the season with a gut-wrenching overtime loss in the playoffs of the ILH Tournament to end the 2016-17 season.
The Raiders graduated five seniors and are counting on four returnees from last year to lead the way for this year’s scrappy, undersized team. Leadership will be crucial, with the addition of three sophomores and four freshmen making their varsity debut and expected to provide significant contributions this season. Led by 5’6 junior point guard Tori Lynn Maeda, the Raiders will look to play fast and push the tempo. Maeda will have options in 5’6 senior shooting guard Kellie Okamura and 5’8 senior center Kayla Malta. Returning junior guard Shyann Kahalehoe will provide additional leadership while she continues to recover from off-season surgery. Coach Young will rely on an up-tempo style of play with constant ball pressure, quick transition and the green light for his many outside shooters.
